The Fake Fishermen | Sri Lanka

On our last day in Sri Lanka I drove from Unawatuna for approx. 12km to Kogalla by scooter trying to see the fishermen sitting on a wooden stick in the sea. It is a famous scenery in the south of Sri Lanka and quite often seen on advertisment pictures of Sri Lanka. These Fishermen placed their wooden stick deep into the sand. On the wooden stick, they tighten some smaller sticks that they use as steps and seat. It enables them to fish in deeper water and not getting pushed back by strong waves.

Unfortunately, I left around 12:30pm which is in general not the best time for fishing. But as it was the last day, I still wanted to see them. When I arrived at the spot I couldn't see any Fishermen – only dozens of empty sticks in the water. I spotted one guy far away on the other side of the beach – so I took my Chances and walked towards him. As soon as I got closer I realized the guy was even wearing traditional clothes.

The area sort of looked like a secret spot to me, so I took some pictures first from far away not to impose myself and felt lucky that I not only found a fisherman, but I also found a Special one! I went closer, took a few photos until one guy saw me. He waved his hand at me – I waved back – and I thought that was his way of saying I shouldn´t take Pictures of him– so I stopped. But then he made this „Money“ sign with his hands and pointed to the beachfront.

I realized there was a bus full of tourist paying for taking pictures. I waved back at him and turned around. I went back the same way I was coming from. I was curious about this place with the Tourists so I walked on the street. When I reached that point the Tourists were just about to leave and the traditional Fishermen were already changing back to their shorts. I found it funny and thought that, after all, it´s the same story everywhere.
