The amazing train trip from Kandy to Ella
Probably one of the best train rides we ever did. If you ever go to Sri Lanka take this train it is a experience by itself. Hang on the train while you are enjoying an amazing landscape with loads of tea plantages and waterfalls.

The train takes incredible 6-7 hours. I couldn't find out the track distance, but the road is about 132km. The train starts in Kandy at 8:30 am. Already a lot of locals are sitting in the train as it starts from Colombo in the early morning, but most of the tourists (and there are many) are taking it from Kandy. It is besides Sigiriya one of another highlight or must do’s in Sri Lanka.

The train was super packed. I was literally pressed to the middle of the waggon, seeing just heads and windows from above. Even with 182 cm you barely see anything, as the windows are just to low. After a while I positioned myself a bit better in the front of the waggon. Giulia was with other 4 Sri Lankan on approx.1 square meter directly on the open door. She also could not see so much in the beginning, but we knew directly on the doors is the best way to travel on this train.
After 1,5 hour 2 locals which were seated directly in front of me left the train. I was already happy and exited that I’m going to see more. I told Giulia to come over as they are about to leave, but at that point she already preferred to stay – she made it already almost to the door.
Anyway, and even a window seat – yes! In the same moment a young American lady, double the size then me was taking the seat next to me. I already felt her presents on my part of the seat – a short eye contact – then she started to press me literally out of the window to make space for her other friend. Seriously ? What’s going on? – you are already taking 50% of my seat and you still wanna have more?
I was getting squeezed like a lemon. At that moment I was speechless as she did it with such a rudeness that I just stand up and told her – “Here have it, we can switch later” - “Oh that is so nice of you!“ she replied.
By the way after I left she invited her other 2 friends over and she directly felt asleep for the whole train ride. Anyway, 1h later a lot people already left the train so Giulia and I could enjoy the amazing train ride directly at the door.
